Jack Russell's have always held a special place in my heart. After my dad brought home my first JRT puppy it was all down hill from there. There has not been a time since that we have not had at least 1 JRT. Having a farm and spending most of our days in the barn there is a definite need for rodent control. Our faithful JRT's and 1 lone Rat Terrier have always kept the rats at bay. Their natural hunting instincts, small bodies and quick reflexes make them deadly hunters. As our dogs grew older and their ability to hunt on a regular basis declined we knew we needed to add to the pack. We began our search for a Shorty JRT to add to the family. That is when we found Lazy C Ranch and their great Shorty JRTs. Needless to say 1 was not enough and we came home with 3.
The Shorty Jack Russel Terrier is known for shorter legs. People give them all sorts of names but the breed all started with the "Foundation Stock" from England in the 1800th century. They were bred to be small hunting dogs. The outer appearance of Jack Russell Terriers presents a small dog that can rang from 7" to 14" Tall and weigh from 6 lbs to 30 lbs. The average Short Leg Breeder, breeds 9" to 10" Tall Jacks. The average Standard Leg Breeder, breeds 12" to 14" Tall Jacks.
Shorty's are known for their big personality in a more compact package. They are great hunters and fantastic family pets. JRT's have gotten a bad reputation as being a "hyper" breed and we have found nothing of the sorts. JRT's are a working dog and like any working breed they need proper exercise. These dogs can work great in an apartment setting if the family is committed to proper exercise and socialization. They thrive on the farm and love to travel. Each JRT has their own unique personality and its unfair to group them all into one category. While one dog may prefer the luxury of the warm fluffy bed while gazing out the windows, the other may enjoy the daily hunt and mud puddle romp before crashing at the foot of their person once they come in for their evening nap.
Regardless if you choose one of our fabulous Shorties it is important that families do their homework and understand the breed they are inviting into their family. JRT's are wonderful additions to the family and any new dog owner should also work closely with their vets and breeders to ensure the health and well being of their dogs.

Retired female
lcr Pip Squeak
Tri Color Smooth Coat
Sire: LCR Billy Bob Dam: LCR Hot Rod Honey
Pip is the couch potato in the family. She loves to be held and snuggled and her favorite position is on her back so she can get lots of neck and belly rubs. Her favorite trick is to beg and she uses it to her advantage. Don't let her sweet personality fool you though! When its time to hunt for those pesky rats in the barn she is quick and efficient. Road trips are her favorite and quite often she is found sitting in the passenger seat waiting for a car ride. Pip is sure to be an excellent mother and we know she will pass on her perfect loving personality to her puppies.
